Wedding toast went off the rails when I brought up China's one-child policy

At my cousin's wedding in Cleveland last summer, her new husband's uncle stood up and gave a toast celebrating how 'finally' they could have kids, then turned it into a rant about how some cultures discourage big families. Has anyone else had a family event turn into a debate about cultural taboos out of nowhere?

Had a friend whose baby shower somehow turned into her aunt lecturing everyone about how modern parents are ruining kids by not spanking. It was super awkward and totally killed the vibe.

Wish someone would've pointed out that the spanking debate ignores the real issue - kids remember the vibe, not the lesson. My cousin got spanked for stealing candy at 6, now she's 30 and still brings up how humiliated she felt at the checkout line. Meanwhile my neighbor never laid a hand on her son and he's the most respectful kid in the cul-de-sac. The aunt probably thought she was helping but that kind of advice just makes people defensive instead of actually discussing discipline strategies.
