Rant: Stop letting your GC pick the windows without checking the NFRC labels

I'm seeing this way too much lately. People are spending 300k+ on a custom build and just trusting whatever window the builder says is 'good'. Last month I helped a friend check his builder's window choice for a house in Austin. The builder picked a mid tier brand with a U factor of 0.35. My friend ended up swapping to a 0.28 U factor window for only $120 more per window. That's a huge difference in Texas heat. The builder wasn't trying to screw him, he just always uses that one brand. Has anyone else caught their builder just defaulting to cheap windows?

Doesn't it kind of happen with everything now though? People just trust the default choice and never question it, whether it's windows or something else.
