We put in a big mudroom with built-in lockers and it cost more than our first car...
When we were drawing up plans, our builder said a proper mudroom would run about $8,500 for the cabinets and tile. I thought that was crazy for a back entry... but we did it anyway. Now, with two kids and a dog, it's the best money we spent. All the wet coats, muddy boots, and school bags have a home and our main house stays clean. Has anyone else splurged on a space like this and felt it was totally worth it?

How much did you spend on that first car, a Geo Metro? I always saw mudrooms as a fancy extra, but watching my sister's house turn into a gear dump every weekend made it click. That kind of built-in storage isn't just for looks, it's a system that actually works. Your post might finally push me to stop using a random bench by the door.
