A Wired piece from last year traced the decline to around 2012 with the rise of algorithmic content moderation. It's wild how much the tone shifted almost overnight, lmao.

Read a similar article that said the same thing about 2012. Algorithms started picking what we see and killed random chats. Everything became made for clicks. It felt less like talking to people and more like feeding a machine. That's why I stick to smaller places too.
