My coworker told me my 'home base' idea was a total waste of money

I was renting a cheap apartment in Medellin for $400 a month to keep as my permanent address and a place to store stuff. I thought it was smart for stability. Then my friend, who's been doing this for eight years, looked at my budget and said, 'You're paying for an empty room 10 months a year. That's a security blanket, not a strategy.' It hit me hard because he was right. I was scared of being completely untethered. I let the lease go last month. Now I use a mail service, put my few important things in a small storage unit back home, and that extra cash goes straight into my travel fund. It feels risky but also way more free. How do other people handle having a 'home' when you're never really there?

Man, that's a solid move. I did the same thing with a storage unit for years, paying for a locker full of junk I never saw. Finally sold it all and felt ten pounds lighter. @zara166 is dead on about the security blanket thing. My home base now is a good friend's garage for a couple boxes and a mail service. That freed up cash lets me stay places longer without sweating the monthly bills back home.
