Just realized my old man was right about pre-drilling screw holes
I was putting up some new shelving in my garage last weekend and kept splitting the pine boards with every other screw. My dad always nagged me to pre-drill and countersink everything but I thought it was a waste of time. Then my neighbor Bob came over to borrow my circular saw and saw me cursing at the wood. He said "you know your dad was right about that pre-drill stuff right?" and showed me how a pilot hole keeps the wood from cracking and makes the screw sit flush. I tried it on the next shelf and it went in perfect no splits at all. Now I feel dumb for ignoring good advice for like 15 years. Has anyone else had that moment where you finally admit a parent or older person knew what they were talking about?

My friend Mike had this same thing happen with his dad's advice about sharpening lawn mower blades. He spent years just slamming them onto rocks and stuff when they got dull, and his mower would leave this ragged cut on the grass. His dad kept telling him to file them down properly but Mike thought it was just old man nonsense. Then one day his neighbor came over and showed him how to actually sharpen them right, and Mike said the difference was night and day. He called his dad that same night to finally admit he was right about the whole thing.
