Should I redo my backsplash or just patch it after that grout disaster?
I was in my kitchen last Saturday in Portland tiling a new backsplash and I mixed the grout way too watery. It seeped under the tiles and now there's these weird light spots showing through the thinset. Now I'm stuck wondering if I should pull the whole thing off and start over or just try to cover it with a thicker grout layer. Has anyone else had grout go all wrong and did you find a fix that actually looked okay?

kim_nelson are you sure patching never works, or is that just bad memories talking?

Funny you should say that, because I actually think pulling the whole thing off might be the smarter move here. Patches on backsplashes always look like patches to me, and that watery grout problem usually means you've got moisture trapped behind the tiles anyway. Starting over sounds painful but at least you'll know everything is solid before you put on a fresh layer. Better to do it right once than keep staring at those weird spots every time you make coffee.
