Just looked up the actual RPM limits on my cutterhead and I think we're all running them too fast

Found a manual from the 80s for a similar Ellicott model and it said max 180 RPM, but I see guys online running theirs at 250 without blinking. Has anyone else actually checked their spec plate or are we all just guessing?

Running them too fast builds up heat and wears the teeth faster, so you're actually losing money in the long run. If the old manual says 180, there's a reason for it.

I had a buddy who used to run his saw way too fast because he thought it saved time. Kept telling me the old manuals were just outdated. He went through three chains in one season, and the last one actually snapped on him mid-cut. Said the tooth bed was so warped from heat you could see the blue tint on the metal. Ended up costing him more in replacement chains than if he'd just gone slow from the start.
