Question about a landlord's right to enter my place in Edmonton
Last Tuesday, my landlord in Oliver came by with only 12 hours notice to check the smoke alarm. The Alberta law says they need 24 hours notice for most things. I told him no, but he said it was an emergency check. It wasn't broken or beeping, so I don't think it counts. This has me wondering where the line is. On one side, landlords need to keep the place safe. On the other, tenants have a right to privacy and proper notice. Has anyone in Edmonton had a similar argument and how did it turn out?

Oh man, that's a tough spot. My old landlord in Garneau tried something similar, saying he needed to "inspect the balcony for winter" with like, 10 hours notice. I stood my ground and he backed off, but it got super awkward for months after (he was really bad about taking out the building's recycling, but that's another story).
