Rental agreement dispute over a broken furnace in January

Our heat went out on a -30 day in Edmonton back in January. Landlord said it wasn't urgent because we had space heaters. I looked up the Residential Tenancy Act and found out they have to fix heat within 24 hours. Sent a formal notice and suddenly a repair guy showed up next morning. Has anyone else had to push back on a landlord about essential repairs here?

Bet landlords bank on tenants not knowing the law so they can push their luck. Space heaters in -30 are a fire hazard waiting to happen on top of being useless. They should be paying for your extra electricity too since those things suck power like crazy.

-30 AND they said that to you?? That's insane.

Oh man this is too real. Same thing happened to me in my old place near Calgary. Furnace broke in December and the guy literally told me to just wear a sweater and use a space heater. I had to send him the text from the tenancy act before he did anything. Space heaters in -30 are basically useless anyway, they just make one tiny corner of a room warm while the rest of your apartment is still freezing cold. It is actually wild that landlords try to get away with ignoring something that serious during a deep freeze.
