Rant: That guy at the Whyte Ave bus stop who wouldn't stop lecturing me about recycling

I was waiting for the 4 bus near Whyte and 104th last Tuesday and this older guy just starts going off on me for throwing a coffee cup in the wrong bin. He literally pulled it out and held it up like I committed a crime, yelling about how Edmonton's waste system is doomed because of people like me. I tried to explain it was a compostable lid but he wasn't having any of it, just kept quoting city stats about landfill capacity until my bus came. Has anyone else had a random stranger call them out over something this petty around here?

You know what I've been thinking about since reading this, is how these random encounters kind of reveal something about our city that nobody talks about. Like that guy probably felt completely powerless about some other big problem in his life, maybe his rent went up or he got bad news from the doctor, and then he saw your coffee cup and finally found something he could actually yell at and control. Its like road rage but for recycling bins. I had a lady scream at me once at the Terwillegar dog park for not picking up my dog's poop when I literally had the bag in my hand already reaching down, and later I found out her dog had just died. Not excusing the behavior obviously, but it makes you wonder what else is going on with these people who feel the need to police strangers over small stuff.

Yeah that's a good point. Maybe I'm that guy for some people, yelling at my recycling bin like it personally offended my ancestors. Probably looked pretty stupid standing there telling a plastic bottle it could do better. But man, people get weird about small stuff when bigger stuff is falling apart. Makes you wonder how many of those angry strangers are just a bad doctor visit away from losing it on a parked car.

Guess I'll go yell at my recycling bin for judging me then.
