Hot take: networking events in LA are mostly just awkward group therapy sessions
I went to one of those downtown LA mixer things last month and this guy in a suit spent 10 minutes telling me his startup was 'disrupting the avocado supply chain.' Then he asked if I could introduce him to investors. I told him I work the fry station at a restaurant in Hollywood and he just walked away mid-sentence. Has anyone actually made a real business connection at one of these things or is it all just people fishing for favors?

Read somewhere that 90% of people at those are just salespeople disguised as entrepreneurs.

Back in 2019 I went to this networking mixer in Austin where a guy spent 20 minutes explaining his "disruptive platform" before I realized he was just selling essential oils out of his trunk. @hannaho52 your point is spot on about the salespeople posing as entrepreneurs. I saw another fellow hand out 50 business cards for a "lead generation service" that was really just him cold calling from a rented WeWork. These events draw more people trying to sell you their next big thing than folks who actually built something from scratch.
