Rant: My BCI calibration session went sideways for 4 straight days
Last week I had a nightmare run with my home EEG headset trying to get my motor imagery classifier stable. Day one the signal was fine, but by day three it kept misreading my left hand cues as tongue movements. I recalibrated every morning around 7 AM like the manual said, but ambient noise from a nearby construction site in Tacoma threw everything off. On day four I finally realized the issue was my own muscle tension, I was clenching my jaw without noticing. Has anyone else dealt with a calibration that just refuses to hold when your environment or body state shifts even slightly?
Wondering if this is really the crisis you're making it out to be. Four days of a shifting signal on a home EEG headset sounds annoying, sure, but is that a "nightmare run" or just normal consumer gear being consumer gear? Cheap headsets pick up jaw clenching, blinking, and a truck driving by, that's kind of what they do, so maybe the real issue is expecting lab-level stability from something you wear on your couch. Construction noise in Tacoma and your own teeth clenching are not surprises, they're the baseline of home recording. Recalibrating every morning at 7 AM like the manual says might actually be part of the problem, since your body at 7 AM is not your body at noon.
