That time I tried a butter knife for pointing in a pinch

Had a job out in Billings a few weeks back and forgot my pointing trowel at home. Used a butter knife from the dinette to do the mortar work on a small chimney repair. It actually worked okay for the first 10 bricks, but then the handle broke off and I got mortar all over my hand. Has anyone else ever had to use a weird tool when theirs went missing?

Yeah, that mortar on the hand part really stings, you're not wrong about that. It gets in every little crack and dries hard as concrete. But the real kicker for me was when the butter knife handle snapped. I was holding the blade with my bare fingers trying to finish the last few bricks. That's when you realize how much leverage you lose with a tiny piece of metal. I had to wrap electrical tape around it just to keep a grip. Never using a kitchen tool for masonry again, I'll drive back home before I make that mistake twice.
