Just realized I was using the wrong coolant mix this whole time

Been running my Haas VF-2 at 5% coolant concentration for like 2 years because I thought thinner was better for chip evacuation. A tool rep came by last week and showed me his refractometer reading on my sump - it was basically water. What coolant percentage are you guys running on aluminum jobs?

Man I felt this one in my bones. I was running my Fadal 4020 at like 3% for damn near a year because I thought more water meant less gunk buildup on the ways. Then a buddy who does production work brought his refractometer over and laughed his ass off when he dunked it in my sump. Switched to 7% on aluminum and my inserts started lasting way longer, no more built up edge on the flutes. Night and day difference just from getting the concentration right.

Is it really that big of a deal though? I've run my machine on straight water for years and never had issues, maybe your buddy just wanted to sell you a refractometer lol.
