Just realized talking about death at dinner is normal in Mexico
Went to a friend's family gathering in Oaxaca last month and they casually discussed funeral plans over tacos. Here in Canada people act like you cursed them if you mention death. Anyone else notice stuff like this in other cultures?

Oh come on, let's be real here. Canada has it right. Nobody wants to hear about funeral costs and burial plots while they're trying to enjoy their tacos. My British grandmother would've walked out if someone started discussing cremation over dinner, that's just basic manners. Being super casual about death takes away the respect it deserves, you know? Like, imagine if someone just casually mentioned their will at Thanksgiving like it was the weather, that'd kill the whole mood.

Totally get that. There's a time and place for everything, and dinner table is not it for death talk. Your grandmother sounds like she had the right instincts.
