Frozen pipe burst in my basement at 3 AM on Christmas Eve

I was up late wrapping presents when I heard water dripping. Ran downstairs and saw a crack in the copper pipe near the foundation. Turned off the main valve quick but water was already everywhere. Used a compression fitting and a torch to patch it since no hardware stores were open. Anybody got a better way to handle emergency pipe repairs without calling a plumber at 3 AM?

Honestly, I used to be all about the "wait for a pro" approach like miller.avery said about waiting for dawn and a plumber. But after a frozen pipe situation in my own basement at 2 AM a few years back, I totally changed my mind. The water was already pooling and I had Christmas decorations floating around. I grabbed a torch and a compression fitting just like you did, and it honestly worked fine. Sure, it's a bit sketchy if you don't know what you're doing, but if you're careful and keep a fire extinguisher nearby, it's way better than watching your basement flood for hours. Ngl, that quick fix saved me hundreds and a ton of stress.

Touching a torch to a live pipe seems risky. I'd wait for dawn and a plumber.
