That $30 moisture meter I bought was a waste of money

I kept reading online how every DIYer needs a moisture meter before painting or tiling. So I grabbed one from Home Depot for 30 bucks last weekend. Tested it on dry drywall, wet wood, and even a wet sponge. The readings jumped all over the place with no consistency at all. Has anyone else found these cheap meters to be basically useless?

Did you try it on different surfaces or just the same spot repeatedly?

Did you test it on carpet versus tile? That made a difference for me.
