My painter buddy said 'fire your worst client' and I can't stop thinking about it
We were grabbing a beer after a job in Tacoma last week and he told me he dropped a client who was always late on payments and changed the scope constantly. He said the mental energy spent on that one account was holding back three good ones. I've always pushed through with every client, thinking revenue is revenue. Has anyone actually done this and seen their business get better?

That line about mental energy holding back three good accounts is dead on. I finally cut loose a constant complainer last year. My stress went way down and I had way more time for clients who actually valued the work. Revenue stayed the same because I filled the spot with better work. It feels scary but it's the best move.

Margaret692 nailed it with that move. Cutting a bad client is like getting rid of a rock in your shoe, you don't realize how much it was slowing you down until it's gone. The mental space they take up is huge, and it always goes to better use. It's tough to do when you're worried about money, but a draining client costs you more than they pay. How long did it take you to find a better replacement after you let that one go?
