A client in Austin said my cable work looked like a rat's nest

They pointed at the back of their office server and said 'I can't tell what's what if something goes wrong.' Now I always leave a few extra inches of slack and use different colored velcro ties for different cable types, like blue for network and red for power. Anyone have a better system for color coding in a small business setup?

Color coding is a great start. You could also add small printed labels at both ends of each cable. A label maker with clear tape makes it easy to note the device name and port number. That way you can trace a single cable without having to follow it through the whole bundle.

That "trace a single cable" idea from @hunt.max is so smart... it's like the whole point of good labels. I see this everywhere now, where a little upfront work saves so much time later when you're confused or in a hurry. It's a small habit that just makes things easier.

Label both ends with the device and port number, it saves a ton of time later.
