My campus group dropped $800 on a speaker fee and it blew up in our faces

Look at the student council budget at most high schools. They might have five grand for the whole year. That $800 hit could wipe out their prom decorations or charity drive. It sets a bad example where a few complaints get more weight than the hard work of the whole planning team. Schools need to back their student leaders when they follow the rules, not leave them broke because someone got upset.

My campus group dropped $800 on a speaker fee and it blew up in our faces

Honestly, I see this a different way. The real problem is letting a loud minority shut down a paid event your whole group planned. That $800 loss is bad, but the bigger issue is your school caving and making you eat the cost. Next time, maybe the school should cover the fee if they're the ones pulling the plug.

Got called out for my hose routing on a Detroit 60 series rebuild

Man, that old timer did you a solid. I had the same wake-up call on a Cummins ISX, where the power steering lines run behind the accessory drive. Bundled them tight for a clean look, and a year later I got the call about a leak. Now I use those little rubber-lined P-clips to hold lines separate, and I always check for any hidden edges that move with engine torque. That extra space and padding is cheap insurance.

My board group's trash can is a plastic nightmare

See where you're coming from with the plastic overload, but it's not just on the companies. We all buy the stuff. Maybe your group could agree to bring reusable bottles and cups next time. Starts with people making different choices, not just waiting for the box to change. What did the rest of the board say when you brought it up?
