Am I the only one who thinks the 'ask anything' rule just makes people ask dumber questions?

Last week in a thread about local politics, someone asked how to boil an egg, and the mods said it was fine because 'anything' means anything. Has anyone else seen the quality of questions drop since that became the official stance?

My old sewing machine in Portland kept jamming on thick denim seams

I switched to a size 18 denim needle and slowed the motor speed down to about half, which made a huge difference. It took me three tries on a jacket hem to get the tension right without breaking thread. Anyone else have tips for working with heavy fabrics like 10oz canvas?

Got a weird call from a client in Austin about a 'secure' email service

I was at my shop last month, testing a new circuit tracer, when a regular customer called. He said his email provider, ProtonMail, just sent a notice they might have to start logging IP addresses in some countries. He was really stressed because he uses it to talk with family back home where the government watches everything. It made me think about how a simple tool update can change someone's whole ability to speak freely. Has anyone else had a service they rely on suddenly change its privacy rules?

My cat just knocked over a bottle of wheat paste I mixed for a rebind, and I found out from a 1920s manual that some recipes originally called for adding a teaspoon of vinegar to prevent mold, which seems wild.

Switched from a free VPN to a paid one with a no-logs policy and the difference is night and day

I used a popular free VPN for about 6 months to try and keep my browsing private. It was slow and I got weird targeted ads that showed they were selling my data. Last month, I switched to a paid service, Mullvad, that costs 5 euros a month and has a proven no-logs policy. My connection speed doubled and I don't get those creepy ads anymore. The key was realizing a 'free' privacy tool that makes money another way can't really protect your speech. Has anyone else made a similar switch and noticed a real change in their online feel?

My book club's fantasy pick turned me into a believer

I always stuck to serious fiction for our meetings, thinking fantasy was just for kids. Then our club voted for a fantasy novel, and I groaned inside. We read 'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss, and I dragged my feet starting it. Once I began, the world-building hooked me fast. The magic system felt real, and the characters had depth I didn't expect. At our debate, everyone pointed out themes about story-telling and truth. Hearing their takes helped me see the genre in a new light. Now I'm pushing for more fantasy reads, and our talks are way more fun.

I was testing a new puck prep method involving a distributor tool and perhaps too much enthusiasm. After tamping with what I thought was GENTLE pressure, I locked the portafilter in and hit the brew switch, only to have hot coffee and grounds erupt like a volcano. It coated my apron, the cabinets, and even my lucky mug in a fine, bitter spray. Honestly, that machine has NEVER shown that much personality before.
