Yeah that's a rough one. Did the same thing years ago trying to get a tractor back together before dark. Got diesel sprayed all over the engine bay, and the smell hung around for weeks. It never actually saves time because you end up cleaning up the mess and doing the bleed procedure anyway, just now you're angry and covered in fuel. Some shortcuts just cost you more.
